Historic Shelton House
ADORABLE guest suite just three blocks to downtown Main Street in Waynesville where you'll find some great locally-owned shops, breweries, and delicious food options! This suite has been extensively remodeled and furnished with guests comfort in mind! You'll be greeted by the lush trees and flowering bushes as you walk to the suite entrance which overlooks the Hart Theater and seasonal Saturday Farmers Market! You also get a good view of the Smoky Mountains from the many windows surrounding this suite.
The apartment is located upstairs from the Museum of NC Handicrafts gift shop which sits on 4+ acres of gorgeous hilly land with mountain views. You will have your own free parking spot plus an additional space for a second vehicle if needed. One king bed and one queen bed with plenty of seating in the living area for entertainment, TV, and games. You'll find that although the space is small, it's very inviting and will have everything you need including soaps, paper products, coffee pods, and more!
High-speed WIFI with a Roku for guests to log into their own streaming services.
We do allow one small, well-behaved dog for an additional fee of $75.
You will have the entire unit to yourself which is accessed by a separate outside entrance with a coded door lock for your safety (and no need to keep up with keys!) There is a laundry area downstairs in a separate entrance from the unit which is available to guests upon request.
Interesting Facts:
What we now call the carriage house, this structure was built by Will Shelton around 1918. Originally a 2nd floor apartment for the housekeeper, the ground level had a coal bin storage area and a carriage house that was later turned into a two-car garage. In 2019 we opened the “Shelton Carriage House Gift Shop”. Looking for a gift, souvenir, or treasure….you will find it here. We have over 25 artists/crafters who are displaying their works in the shop.
The main home on this property was built in 1875 by Stephen Shelton for his family. He used black walnut trees to make the doorways, mantels, wardrobe closet, bed frame, and stair railing. The property is on the National Register of Historic Places and currently serves as the Museum of NC Handicrafts, with one of the finest folk art craft collections in the Southeast! The collections in the Museum and Barn consists of beautiful antiques, heritage crafts, agricultural exhibits, and other items from crafters and artisans past and present. The Village of Yesteryear crafters were instrumental in providing donations of crafts for the Museum. Charles Ray, oldest nephew of Will and Hattie Shelton, donated selected items from Will and Hattie’s Southwestern Native American collection to the Museum.
